This article gives a brief introduction of what an encyclopedia is and how it has been created. The intriguing process of obtaining references, language enrichment, and how it has been created. The intriguing process of obtaining references, language enrichment, and also acquiring the knowledge of a particular topic connected to many other topics are some of the characteristic features of the encyclopedia.

There is a library in your school, town or city. Varied books of Marathi literature and many other topics are available there. The Marathi Encyclopedia (Marathi Vishwakosh), Marathi Charitrakosh, Marathi Vyutattikosh, etc., take the place of pride in every library.

The encyclopedias were created to collate knowledge and information of all subjects of Social Sciences, Pure Science, and Technology. Marathi Vishwakosh is helpful to gain knowledge of the main subject and its related topics.

The need for an encyclopedia:

In India, the spread of education took place rapidly. Due to increasing industrialization, the scientific and technological needs of society started to grow. Many words and terms came into existence and the language also was enriched. Therefore, the need for such a multi-subject-database (encyclopedia) arose.

The Marathi language was accepted as the medium of higher education. Therefore, as an acute need for reference books in the Marathi language and the recognition of Marathi as the official language of government, it became necessary to produce a multi-subject-database (Vishwakosh) of the Marathi language. During the pre-Independence era, the very first encyclopedia was launched by Dr. Shrifhar Vyankatesh Ketkar.
